TT Virtual Reading Group Discussion (JULY SELECTION) -- "ALIAS GRACE"
Books

James Ellroy makes me punch drunk-- it's not the violence but the grammatical vigor: subject verb object, subject verb object, with the occasional subject verb ellipsis or verb object dash. Makes me feel like his punching bag. He's supposed to bring jazz to writing, but I feel like it's the staccato of a drummer rather than the octave dancing swoops of sax or clarinet. I went through White Jazz easily enough-- but strictly on the QT as JE says- I was getting pretty hungry for a metaphor, an adjective or a subclause.

Lilith Fair
Music

True, the show is not very diverse, except for some second-stage acts, but that is part of its appeal. Who wants to pay 50 bucks to go to a festival when only one or two acts are worthy paying to see. for example with Lollapalooza this year. Why do I want to see Snoop and Tool, when The only act I like (albeit marginally) is Tricky and the others, I am very unfamiliar with.

And Michelle Goldbers's comment about Paula Cole is indefensible. "I'll go do the laundry, you go have a beer " is certainly not meant to be celebrational. The song is a condemnation of men who take their women for granted. I agree it is one of the worst songs she has recorded and Paula can be a bit preachy in a cliched way, but much of what she sings about is worthwhile - especially her first CD, Harbinger.

It would be great to have male singer-songwriters have part of the bill, and I am anxiously awaiting next year. It is nice to go to a festival where the target audience is not teenagers or drug-addicts. There are many talented acts out there that deserve attention, but many of them go unnoticed because they are not instant successes and not every song they record is easily identifiable as a hit song. These artists are intended for thoughtful adults and it is nice to see them get so much attention.

Goldman's Revenge
Headlines

cj Gordon - 10:53am Jul 15, 1997 PST (#50 of 53)

It occurred to me that while all this crap is going on, all the interviews, jokes, Goldman's revenge, the auction of his home and whatever else is still floating around, the kids are with Simpson, hearing all this. I felt the same way about the trial, 2 people were murdered, yet somehow that seemed a side issue. Also, there is a pension that Simpson receives each year that cannot be touched by all this, a rather large sum from what I remember reading. So, although I'm sure that he is upset by all this, and is somewhat financially inconvenienced, he will not exactly suffer.
