SALON'S TV PICKS
Weekend Aug. 8-10, 1997_|_BY JOYCE MILLMAN
S P E C I A L S The 20th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death is still a week away (Aug. 16), but the TV trove of Elvis lore opens wide Sunday with the very strange new cable movie Elvis Meets Nixon (9 p.m. Sun., Showtime). This dark comedy speculates about what the two men talked about during the 1970 Oval Office meeting that led to one of the most bizarre photo ops of our time. Starring Rick Peters as the King and Bob Gunton as Nixon. And speaking of anniversaries, the Discovery Channel is marking one, too, with the two-hour retrospective Shark Bites: A Decade of Shark Week (9 p.m. Sun., Discovery). S P O R T S Baseball: Marlins at Braves (7:35 p.m. Fri., 1:05 p.m. Sun., TBS); White Sox at Mariners (8 p.m. Sun., ESPN). WNBA basketball: Utah at Sacramento (9 p.m. Fri., Lifetime); Los Angeles at Houston (2 p.m. Sat., NBC). Exhibition football: Seahawks at 49ers (9 p.m. Sat., CBS); Bears at Dolphins (8 p.m. Sun., TNT). S E R I E S Homicide (10 p.m. Fri., NBC) reruns one of the best episodes from last season, about the investigation of a prison murder. Charles S. Dutton does great work as a proud con. In fact, this episode blows "Oz" out of the water. Investigative Reports (9 p.m. EDT/10 PDT Sat., A&E) uncovers a KGB Cold War program of "sexpionage," in which women were forced into service to seduce foreign spies, diplomats and military personnel. King of the Hill (8:30 p.m. Sun., Fox) reruns the amazing episode where Hank's efforts to teach Bobby about the dangers of smoking inadvertently turn the kid into a nicotine fiend and rekindle ex-smokers Hank and Peggy's own flames. T A L K Friday lineups: Demi Moore and Aerosmith guest on David
Letterman (CBS); Jay Leno (NBC) hosts Jennifer Aniston and Magic
Johnson; Tom Snyder (CBS) talks with Queen Latifah; Charlie Rose
(PBS) has a scheduled Generation Q panel; William H. Macy and Jack
Valenti are panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC); Conan
O'Brien (NBC) features Dave Foley, who apparently wasn't on last
night as scheduled.
