SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
THURSDAY, NOV. 5, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

Brian De Palma's 1996 thriller Mission: Impossible (8 p.m., ABC) has its network TV premiere. The impossible part is the plot, which was incomprehensible without being broken up every 15 minutes for commercials. But Tom Cruise has some cool stunts. The World's Most Shocking Moments: Caught on Tape (9 p.m., Fox) brings us all the pseudo-snuff you could possibly want -- plane crashes, car crashes, animal attacks, natural disasters -- in one handy special! Take a whiff -- the smell of November sweeps is in the air.

S E R I E S

On Friends (8 p.m., NBC), Rachel, Monica and Phoebe each have a tale to tell about fur. Maris wants Niles back on Frasier (9 p.m., NBC). ER (10 p.m., NBC) has a timely story line about a gay teen who's beaten and left for dead. 48 Hours (10 p.m., CBS) reports on a custody battle over a 10-year-old girl.
