WorldCom = World Domination?

From the outset, Internet participants have carried each others' data across their networks for free. It is this arrangement that gave the system its low cost and global reach. As individual participants get bigger, there is a growing temptation for the larger to discriminate against the smaller, charging them for access or refusing connections altogether ... The proposed merger [of Worldcom and MCI] unites two of the biggest participants in the emerging Internet industry, together handling around 60 per cent of backbone traffic. It provides an ideal opportunity for an examination of the competition issues. The federal authorities should rise to this challenge.
