About the Salon Classics Book Group

When was the last time you finished a terrific book bursting with the desire to share your thoughts about it with other readers? Reading doesn't have to be a purely solitary experience, as thousands of book groups across the country are proving every month. Starting this month, Salon will bring the book group experience online -- with an exciting new twist.

With the launch of the Salon Classics Book Group, you'll have the opportunity to join well-known contemporary authors and other Salon readers in lively conversations about some of the greatest books of all time. The Salon Classics Book Group pairs such notable authors as Joyce Carol Oates, Garrison Keillor, Jane Hamilton, Galway Kinnell, Carol Shields and David Denby with works by Charlotte Brontë, Joseph Conrad, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Charles Dickens, Theodore Dreiser and Jane Austen.

We're presenting the Salon Classics Book Group in concert with the publication of The New York Public Library Collector's Editions. These beautiful moderately priced, richly enhanced editions are illustrated with original art and handwritten letters, diaries and manuscripts from the collections of the Library. All royalties from this series will go to the New York Public Library to reserve and support its collections.

In our first discussion, legendary literary "bad girl" Erica Jong led the conversation about one of literature's most famous adulteresses "Madame Bovary." Award winning novelist Joyce Carol Oates leads our second discussion on Bronte's "Jane Eyre." Garrison Keillor led our third discussion on the wonderfully dark tale of "Sister Carrie" by Theodore Dreiser. For our fifth discussion, we invite you to join Galway Kinnell in a discussion about Emily Dickinson and her work.
