S E R I E S

Friends (8 p.m., NBC) picks up where last season's cliffhanger left off, with the gang at the beach and Ross trying to decide between his new girlfriend and Rachel. On the season opener of Seinfeld (9 p.m., NBC), George has to use a cane because of last season's "Summer of George" disaster and his new boss assumes he's permanently disabled. Also, Kramer uses butter as a skin softener, Elaine is on her way back from Europe with a new boyfriend who's also her ex-boyfriend and Jerry has another run-in with Bania the not-funny comic. Cracker (9 p.m., ABC) wraps up its series opening cliffhanger; Fitz rushes to save his son from the lovesick serial killer. ER (10 p.m., NBC) goes live tonight for its season opener. The cast will be performing the episode twice, once for East Coast audiences, once for West Coast. The big question: On videotape, will the show look like just another episode of "General Hospital"?

S P O R T S

Baseball: Braves at Phillies (7:30 p.m., TBS).

N E W--S E R I E S

The new sitcom Union Square (8:30 p.m., NBC) is set in a hip New York City diner. The buzz is not good. The one sure-fire hit of the season, Veronica's Closet (9:30 p.m., NBC), stars Kirstie Alley at full throttle as the high-powered yet insecure founder of a "Victoria's Secret" type of business. While she sells romance, her own marriage to a philandering charmer is falling apart. Alley is at her raunchy best and as a bonus, we get Kathy Najimy as her acerbic, faithful assistant.
