a plate full of sliced chilled fruit, some great bread and real butter for it, some coffee or hot chocolate(tepid in summer) and WILD dance music playing in the background.

I close my eyes and hear the soft surf hitting the beach, there is also a soft shuffling of the palm fronds overhead, and I am dancing with a fruit drink in my one hand and a cool wet cloth in the other( for wiping my heated brow). Katherine Boller | The tragedy of Tiger Leaping Gorge

Suffering the sling's and arrow's of misplaced apostrophe's.

what a surprise to see this topic.

I hiked Tiger Leaping Gorge in 1990. It was most spectacular, and I do feel a twinge of regret that what was dizzyingly, exhileratingly dangerous then will soon be no challenge at all.

But I agree, too, that it's not ours to decide how backward an area should remain. Really, how patronizing to expect that a people should remain "quaint" for the sake of our egos, our sense of aesthetics.

I remember meeting a man leading a donkey along the gorge path. I asked him if he was afraid for himself or his animal, so high above the roaring river, on the scree-strewn, sometimes disappearing path. He nodded vigorously, then looked resigned and said, "That's the way it is."

I'll bet he, for one, will be thrilled by the new road.
